What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness involves moment-to-moment awareness of your inner and outer worlds with nonjudgemental openness and curiosity. While inwardly noticing your thoughts, bodily sensations and emotions, you also take in your surroundings through your senses of sight, smell, hearing, taste and touch. .

By simply observing your thoughts and feelings as they come and go, you free yourself from ruminating about what is wrong with you and your life. Instead of mulling over the past or worrying about the future you open fully to your experience in the present moment. Through this process you come to realize that you are not your thoughts, but rather the awareness behind the thoughts. This helps avoid being hijacked by them. You also begin to find peace in the present moment without needing to change anything about yourself or your life.

As you shift from autopilot to mindful living, you create the space needed to make conscious choices, rather than defaulting to habitual reactive patterns of behaviour that leave you feeling stuck.

Open, non-judgemental curiosity also nurtures compassion toward self and others, and helps you discover your innermost values, intuitive wisdom, and who you truly are. It is also a portal to your creativity and imagination, which is often blocked by traumatic experiences. Reconnecting with your innate creativity is vital to envisioning new possibilities in life and feeling a sense of hope for the future.

There is extensive evidence that mindfulness can decrease the symptoms of many physical and mental health conditions, decrease levels of acute and chronic stress and improve overall sense of health and wellbeing.

Mindfulness is a skill that not only gets easier the more regularly you practice it, but can also actually change your brain and the way it is wired. The beneficial effects are most noticeable when it is part of your everyday life.
